The St. Eustatius National Marine Park is a protected marine area encircling the Caribbean island of St. Eustatius, part of the Caribbean Netherlands. Established in 1996, it conserves coral reefs, seagrass beds, and historic shipwrecks that sustain the island’s biodiversity and eco-tourism economy.

• Location: Surrounds the island of St. Eustatius, Caribbean Netherlands
• Established: 1996
• Size: Approximately 27.5 km² of marine habitat
• Notable features: Double reef system, volcanic seascapes, and 36 dive sites
The park encompasses both a northern and southern reserve area that protect fringing and patch reefs, volcanic rock formations, and sandy seabeds. Coral species such as elkhorn and brain coral provide habitat for reef fish, turtles, and invertebrates. Seagrass meadows support conch, rays, and juvenile fish essential to regional food webs.
Beneath its waters lie several 18th- and 19th-century shipwrecks, including the Charles Brown cable ship and the Double Reef area rich in artifacts. These remnants reflect St. Eustatius’s role as a major colonial trading port, adding archaeological value to its natural heritage.
Protected since 1996 as the St. Eustatius National Marine Park, Statia’s waters are thriving thanks to forward-thinking conservation efforts that balance fishing, diving, and cultural preservation. Beneath the surface, you’ll find a fascinating blend of reefs, pinnacles, and historical artifacts.
Statia is renowned for its incredible wreck diving. Explore the iconic Chien Tong, a 170-foot vessel intentionally transformed into a vibrant artificial reef, now teeming with marine life including reef sharks, barracuda, turtles, and massive schools of fish. Or explore the even more dramatic, the Charles L. Brown – the second largest wreck in the Caribbean – an expansive structure, with swim-throughs, and abundant growth at recreational depths .
Beyond the big scenes, Statia shines as a macro lover’s paradise. Spend relaxed, no-rush dives searching sandy flats, seagrass beds, and reef edges for frogfish, jawfish with eggs, nudibranchs, cleaner shrimp, and more.
Adding to the island’s mystique are the legendary blue beads—historic glass artifacts dating back to the 1600s, tied to the island’s past and said to “find” those meant to return.
The historical walking tour through St. Eustatius’ capital, Oranjestad, offers a captivating journey through the island's rich past allowing visitors to explore its historical treasures. This guided tour provides an immersive experience, highlighting key landmarks, buildings, and stories that shaped the island's history. Travelers can discover the unique cultural and architectural heritage of St. Eustatius as they walk through time. It's a must-do activity for history enthusiasts and those seeking to delve into the island's fascinating past.
Explore St. Eustatius by vehicle and discover the island's rich history as a trading hub in the sixteen and seventeen hundreds, and its role in early American independence, making the island a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and tourists interested in the Caribbean's colonial past. During your tour you will explore the island from White Wall, located behind the resort at the foot of the Quill, through Oranjestad, all the way to Boven National Park and Zeelandia Beach where you might be lucky enough to find nestling turtles depending on the time of year.
Best for Friday before departing! Experience the breath taking beauty of St. Eustatius during a guided hike up the island's dormant volcano, the Quill, where you can explore unique flora and fauna within the crater, or enjoy panoramic views from the summit. Boven National Park, although only 2 miles away, is very different. Cacti and Acacia bushes cover rocky outcrops and open grassland, and several trails snake through valleys and along ridges bringing you to secluded bays and viewpoints.
For those that are not interested in hiking, the resort also offers a Sip and Paint option where participants can paint watercolors while sipping wine.
